Marcel Albers, British Formula 3 1992:
A terrible crash in the British Formula 3 claimed the life of a promising Dutchman Marcel Albers. Below are 2 descriptions of the accident:
"20.04.92 (April 20th, 1992)
F3:- Dutch Formula 3 driver Marcel Albers died when he crashed during the Formula Three race at Thruxton. The 25 year-old was given emergency treatment but did not survive. Three spectators including a small child, were treated for minor injuries and the race was abandoned. Victory was awarded to Gil de Ferran. "He went off the track after the accident and into the spectator fencing which fortunately held and prevented spectators from being injured," said a spokesman for the circuit."
........................................................
"Basically, I was told he went over the back wheels of another car on the approach to the chicane, his car rolled, and the roll hoop broke off in one of the rolls, his car then hit the spectator fence and rolled back onto the track.
There are two stories of what happened to him depending on who you talk too, either his crash helmet was ripped off in the accident, or he was decapatated, although he was taken to Hospital (standard practice here) he was dead at the circuit.
My friend who was standing in the spectator area burned his clothes afterwards because he was covered in blood, one of the spectators injured was a baby in a pushchair that was hit by a wheel (the baby was only slightly injured)."

Pierre Levegh & 80 Spectators, LeMans 1955:
The 1955 World Championship was overshadowed by the biggest tragedy in motor racing history. As reigning World Champion, Juan Manuel Fangio was joined at Mercedes-Benz by up-and-coming British driver Stirling Moss and the pair subsequently fought for the 1955 title, tragedy struck at the Le Mans 24-hour race in June. More than 80 spectators were killed after Pierre Levegh lost control of his Mercedes-Benz in the classic French race and ploughed into the watching crowd with fatal results. The accident had major repercussions in Formula One as race organizers cancelled the Grand Prix' in France, Germany, Switzerland and Spain. The image shows the extent of the damage caused and also shows spectators running for their lifes. The worst incident EVER to happen in motor-racing.
